According to an agreement signed between ICQHS and the UNESCO Iraq Office, one of the qanats of Kurdistan region was singled out as a pilot project and a research project on rehabilitation of this qanat was assigned to ICQHS.

In the wake of this agreement, an expert was dispatched to Erbil to choose the best site for the pilot project, and then a team including a geologist, a hydrogeologist and a qanat expert went to the site during July and August 2009 and scrutinized the situation of the qanat and the related groundwater reserve. As a result the final report was submitted to UNESCO Iraq Office on October 2009, and this report was used as a basis for the rehabilitation project.
