The 5th World Water Forum took place in Istanbul, Turkey between 16 March and 22 March 2009.

This event was one of the largest water related gatherings ever held. The Forum comes around every three years in different countries. The slogan of this Forum was "Bridging divides for water".

�The International center of Qanats and Historic Hydraulic Structures activity took part in the abovementioned forum, and it held three workshops at the learning center. These workshops were as follows:

1- How to preserve and rehabilitate Qanats as a sustainable irrigational technique in arid and semi-arid regions

2- How can water play a role in the political history in the arid and semi-arid regions?

3- How to enhance the economic efficiency of qanats?

Moreover a water exhibition took place as a side event where ICQHS disseminated some brochures on its activities as well as a documentary movie "Qanat, Water, Oasis" in the pavilion of UNESCO and Islamic Republic of IRAN.
