Qunli Han, the director and representative of UNESCO Tehran cluster office had a meeting with Dr. Rasool Zargar the deputy minister for water and waste water affairs in his office in the ministry of energy.
This meeting was held on 25 Feb 2008 with the presence of Dr. Semsar Yazdi, the director of ICQHS and the two sides discussed the development of future relation between UNESCO and water sector of Iran. Dr. Zarger started the meeting with his welcome address and then Dr. Semsar gave his presentation on the situation and experiences of ICQHS from early on. He started his talk with a brief on the history of ICQHS and the process of its establishment. He pointed out holding several national and international workshops and seminars, publishing several books and scientific articles and performing several research projects in the region countries as the most notable measures taken by this center. He told: we have planed to hold the first meeting of the governing board of ICQHS in May 2008, by the UNESCO's cooperation and by attendance of representatives from Spain, China, Italy, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Egypt, Oman and UNESCO. He also pointed to the second workshop on qanat which will be held on July 2008.
Dr Han hailed the idea of the second international training course on Qanats, and he put a high value on such events that can establish and then reinforce the links between the academic and international organizations on a ground like this.
After that, Dr. Zargar spoke of the water section's intention to hold the first GB meeting of ICQHS in May 2008.
Then he said that one of our serious apprehensions is climate change, because we believe its disadvantages prevail over its advantages for us. In the ministry of energy we have set up a committee for working on the impacts of climate change on our water resources. Therefore we do care about this matter, and we hail any support UNESCO can provide in this respect. If UNESCO has any case study that can be helpful to us, we would appreciate if they could make it available to us. And if UNESCO likes, we can work on a case study in Iran as a joint project herein.
Dr Han said that the climate change accounts for the heavy snowfall in china, which threatens lives of millions of people there. The impact of climate change is embodied in every aspect of social life, agricultural, industrial, economical, etc. The people living in those areas are not used to such a cold weather which did not have precedent in the past, and if this weather persists, it can bring about some casualty, and may inflict a lot of damages on the infrastructures.
He hoped that ICQHS could set up some branches in the region to develop its activities, and establish connection with such scientific center as UN University.
In closing Dr Han hoped that the budget of ICQHS would meet the approval of the relevant authorities, so that this center can pursue its programs more strongly.
At the end of the meeting Dr Zargar thanked Dr Han to attend this meeting and hoped for further cooperation.
